qtPhDs newsletters: Feb 2022

February 2, 2022

Hello qtPhDs,

Happy February! We hope you are all staying warm and dry and keeping the winter blues at bay.

After-work movie next week at Kendall Sq Cinemas!

Join us next week for an after-work movie evening! We will meet on Tues Feb 8th at Kendall Square Cinemas for a 4:35pm screening of the animated documentary FLEE:

“Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner FLEE tells the story of Amin Nawabi as he grapples with a painful secret he has kept hidden for 20 years, one that threatens to derail the life he has built for himself and his soon to be husband. Recounted mostly through animation to director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, he tells for the first time the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan.” (Link to trailer here.)

We know this might seem a little early for an after-work activity, but on the bright side, we hope that the theater will be relatively empty and therefore more Covid-safe. Tickets are on us! Please RSVP here by Mon Feb 7th at 5pm.

Note: If you sign up and then realize that you will not be able to attend, please update us so we don't purchase too many tickets! You can always email us at qtphds-admin@mit.edu, or message us on Slack.

Qstaff Poly Pride Valentine’s Luncheon

We are invited to a joint event with Qstaff, the LGBTQ+ employee resource group! Come hang out on Zoom over lunch on Valentine’s Day for a chat about polyamory (which was legally recognized in the Cambridge domestic partnership ordinance in March 2021!). More info here, and the link to register is here. Polyamorous people of all orientations as well as allies are welcome to attend!

Coffee and After-work Meetups

qtPhDs hosts coffee hours on the 1st Monday of each month and after-work meetups on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Given the ongoing campus Covid restrictions, these events are still on hiatus, but we hope that we will be able to return soon!

Slack channel: qtPhDs’ Slack channel is graciously hosted by the Qstaff Slack group-- if you would like to join, please email us at qtphds-admin@mit.edu and we will add you!

*Each month we will be featuring a different pride flag in our logo! Our flag of the month is the Aro or aromantic flag, which was created by cameronwhimsy in 2014. The green and light green stripes represent the aromantic spectrum as a whole; white represents the importance of platonic and non-romantic relationships, such as friendships, familial and queerplatonic relationships; and gray and black represent the sexuality spectrum, from aro-aces to aro-allosexuals.
